Why 2020 Is Different Than 2016
A recent poll revealed Joe Biden is taking the lead in key states such as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania by as much as ten points, and that Trump's disapproval rating is now nearly 2 out of every 3 people in the country. People will claim that 2020 will be a repeat of 2016, cynics who don't see the dramatic change our country has undergone in the last 3+ years:
1. We now see exactly what Donald Trump is capable of, from his mishandling of the coronavirus to his work against the environment and the LGBTQIA+ community.
2. Nearly half of all states are pledging to give their electoral votes to the popular vote winners and the Supreme Court has determined that they have the right to do so. Among these states are those who got Trump elected.
3. We are seeing a revolution with regards to race relations. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna, Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others have led to unprecedented calls for reform and increased public conscience not seen with the deaths of Eric Garner, Walter Scott, Philando Castile, Tamir Rice, Alton Sterling, Tony Robinson, and Michael Brown between 2014 and 2016.
4. Joe Biden has emerged as a very strong candidate with regards to his political positions and no Republicans could conceivably have a complaint.
One thing, however, remains the same: We need a more active constituency. We need to vote, work for political campaigns or donate if able, and try to engage in polite debate rather than choosing to live in blissful ignorance!
