How Justin Trudeau Is Changing Canada For The Better
Justin Tudeau has certainly made an impact in his tenure thusfar. Here are a few examples of what has been achieved in Canada since 2015:
1. Advancing ocean conservation: Since Justin Trudeau took office, Canada has banned the shark fin trade, banned cetacean captivity, announced phaseouts of single-use plastics and the unsustainable salmon farm industry, multiplied the area of ocean under some type of protection from 1.5% to over 10%, and launched coastal cleanup and anti-IUU fishing efforts.
2. Improving infrastructure: Trudeau has nearly tripled what he promised in his campaign by creating a 12-year, $180 billion infrastructure plan focused on northern Canada, public transport, eco-friendly and affordable housing, and rural areas.
3. Legalizing marijuana: In 2018, Canada legalized marijuana for recreational and medicinal use, with the funds received to be used for public improvement projects. The process of expunging previous marijuana convictions has also begun.
4. Working toward more humane foreign policy: In the wake of Saudi human rights abuses becoming the major story, he suspended relations with the nation, and he also used diplomatic power against the ethnic cleansing perpetrated in Southeast Asia. He has allowed hundreds of thousands of refugees to settle in Canada and ceased Canadian aerial bombing against ISIL while working to increase humanitarian aid in the region.
5. Saving lives from gun violence: In the wake of a deadly mass shooting, Canada banned deadly assault rifles like the ones used in the shooting.
