President Biden Ends Federal Private Prison Contracts
Private prisons are perhaps the ultimate examples of the injustice that can occur in the justice system. Kids as young as twelve can receive prison sentences for petty crimes because the judge receives kickbacks from private facilities. The very idea of profiting off of incarceration should raise red flags, and a massive step forward has just been taken.
President Biden has signed a directive ordering the attorney general to immediately end contracts with private prisons, meaning almost 15,000 people will be transferred to regular facilities. The president is also committed to ending the crack-cocaine discrepancy, decriminalizing marijuana, closing down youth boot camps, and taking other actions to give nonviolent and youthful offenders clean slates.
