Portugal Closes Last Coal Plant, On Track To Be 100% Renewable By 2035

Portugal had pledged to phase out coal by 2023 and be 80% renewable by 2035. However, it closed one of its last two coal plants this month and plans to close the last in November, months ahead of schedule. Portugal has increasingly been able to generate the needed energy for electricity from renewables, and, as of now, gets 55% of its electricity from renewable sources. If this trend continues, the nation is on track to get all needed energy from wind, hydro, and solar power by 2035.

This is quite significant. Portugal is a nation of over 10 million people, and, if Portugal can do it, virtually any state in America, and, therefore, the United States as a whole, can easily convert entirely to renewable sources by 2045 with only political will.
