Bhutan Is Still Carbon Negative... And Aims To Make More Progress
Bhutan became famous among climate activists in 2017 when it was revealed that the country, which produces 1.5 million tons of carbon a year, was taking out 6 million tons a year, a net carbon negativity of 4.5 million tons a year.
The country, which uses a Gross National Happiness Index, has announced plans for more progress. They plan to give every farmer free electricity to end reliance on wood-burning stoves, give every resident an electric car, make sure at least 75% of their nation is covered in forest forever, expand sustainable hydroelectric power, and become an exporter of renewable energy to nations like China and India, both of which are neighbors that have a combined 1/3 of the human population.
