#TBT: FDR Appoints The First Female Cabinet Member

 

     Frances Perkins is among the handful of cabinet picks who deserves to be called the most significant in American history. The first female and possibly the first LGBT2SQIA+ cabinet member, she became the Secretary of Labor on March 4th, 1933, appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

     This, as well as her role in putting women to work during the Great Depression and World War II, laid the groundwork for rudimentary female workplace equality. In her position, she also secured an end to child labor, the establishment of a minimum wage, the creation of overtime pay, and the right to collective bargaining.
