Costa Rica On Track To Be 100% Renewable By 2025

Costa Rica has a renewable energy advantage compared to its neighbors in Latin America. With a high concentration of rivers and a high amount of rainfall, Costa Rica has been able to run on 98-99 percent renewable energy for a decade, sometimes going 10 months at a time powering their nation on solely renewable energy. At this rate, Costa Rica is on track to be 100 percent renewable by 2025.

Now, Costa Rica must seize this opportunity. Their 1948 military abolition freed funds to be used for social justice and environmental protection programs. Costa Rica must become a net energy exporter, assisting nations like Panama and Nicaragua in transitioning to renewable energy. Costa Rica must also seek to make its transportation and agriculture industries carbon-neutral, as only this will be enough to fight climate change.

However, 100 percent renewable energy by 2025 is more than most nations can say, and Costa Rica should be proud of what they have accomplished while remembering that much more work remains to be done to ensure a livable planet for generations to come.
