Bishops Have No Basis To Blast Biden

Evangelical Trumpism has been flawed from the start. The man who has split up from women at least three times, paid hush money to a porn star, has been accused of sexual assault by dozens of women and girls, had his charity and university shut down for fraud, and is currently facing criminal investigations while dozens of his close associates rot in jail (not to mention his racist, violent, and incompetent conduct as president) is not exactly the epitome of Christian values.

Joe Biden further complicated things for them. Unlike Trump, he is a devout religious man. The second Catholic president after John F. Kennedy, he attended Catholic school in Delaware from ages 12 to 18. He grew even closer to his faith when his wife and young daughter died (leaving him a single father of two young boys), when he suffered a brain aneurysm after the 1988 presidential campaign that nearly ended his political career, when one of his sons (Beau) died of brain cancer, and as friends like John McCain left the Earth. He attends mass every Sunday, doing so on his inauguration days and even at a small church in England at the end of the June G7 summit.

It's been a rough time for the leadership of the Church in reckoning with its past and its priorities. In just five residential schools in Canada, 1,500 indigenous children were discovered in unmarked graves. More than 150,000 children were sent to 100 different schools all the way until 1996, and these Catholic schools, when they weren't killing or abusing the children, committed acts of genocide.

Instead of addressing issues like this, the Catholic Church has chosen to play politics. A coalition of bishops is working to deny Biden and other prominent Democratic politicians, including Dick Durbin, the Eucharist because of their support for abortion and transgender rights. Having a healthy debate about these issues is normal, but using religion to punish people for their political views is despicable. If the Church wants to play politics, it can pay taxes, too. Aside from the fact that the Eucharist is designed to cleanse any perceived or real fallibility in man, it is worth noting that the cardinals who molested or covered up the molestation of countless young boys are still gainfully employed.

For now, Biden's church in Washington, D.C., has announced it will continue to welcome him, and the hypocrites who believe in the first amendment except for when it suits them not to and use their perception of the afterlife to punish people on Earth will continue their whining.
