America's Olympic Team Proves Conservative Trolls Wrong

It's a sad day in America when the Republican Party thinks it's honestly a good idea to root for China over the United States. The shirts Trump supporters love to wear reading "I'd rather be a Russian than a Democrat" are no hyperbole. Conservative trolls took aim at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was the first Summer Olympics held after the election of Donald Trump; it would have been held while he was in the White House, but his ineptitude in handling coronavirus prevented that. I think it's for the best: President Biden supports our Olympic athletes and welcomes them with open arms.

Conservative trolls were out for blood on social media. This was the first time American Olympians kneeled, having take place after the George Floyd protests against the murder of black Americans by the police. For the party that decries "cancel culture," they canceled the Olympics awfully quickly. They think the idea of a Cambodian diver adopted by a single gay father or an 18-year-old Hmong woman from Minnesota are both un-American, and they lashed out at Simone Biles for being a human being; armchair activists who've never accomplished anything and weigh an average of 455 pounds needed to have their say on athletics.

Today, our athletes proved the American ideal. 113 total medals, the most of any team, as well as the most bronze, the most silver, and the most gold. For the seventh Summer Olympics in a row, America has won: 25 years of success. China, which has built its empire by treating its large population like virtual slaves subject to unfair pay, lax environmental laws, suppression of protests, state-run media, summary executions, organ harvesting, and concentration camps, lost to the gay man's Cambodian son and the 18-year-old Hmong Minnesotan. Xi Jinping divulged that China's goal was the most gold medals at any cost, and they failed.

This needs to tell Republicans something: "wokeness," your way of turning compassion into an insult, is not a threat to America's military, America's pastimes, or anything else: you are, with your insistence that nothing change because it will leave you out. You are the problem, not America. China is sulking in 2021, and, in 2022, we need to follow up this win with a global boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics; insult to injury if you will.

America is in the midst of a Second Cold War, one pitting cold dictatorship against life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Republicans may have chosen the former for now, but, in the end, they could not stop the United States of America. To our Olympic athletes: thank you, and know that somebody was proud to support you.
