#TBT: Robert C. Weaver Heads Housing And Urban Development

On January 18th, 1966, Robert C. Weaver took charge of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, a historic day for two reasons. The department, which President Kennedy had sought to create, was newly-established for the purpose of assisting in the resolution of America's growing infrastructure and housing needs.

Secondly, it was the first time an African-American was appointed to a cabinet-level, Senate-confirmed position, a major victory for civil rights in the United States.
