Governor Evers: Promises Made, Promises Kept

Withdraw Wisconsin from the lawsuit challenging Obamacare. Promise made, promise kept. In 2019, Governor Evers withdrew Wisconsin from California v. Texas, a case that made it to the Supreme Court, and, for the third time in a decade, upheld Obamacare.

Cut taxes on the middle class by 10 percent. Promise made, promise kept. In his budgets, Governor Evers cut the income tax on Wisconsinites making $24,000 to $186,000 or couples making $32,000 to $351,000 by more than 15 percent and also significantly cut property taxes. This is in addition to more than $1 billion in direct tax relief for small businesses and middle class families.

Restore two-thirds funding for Wisconsin's schools. Promise made, promise kept. With nearly $750 million in state and federal money added to school funding, Governor Evers restored two-thirds funding to Wisconsin's schools.

Increase funding for technical colleges and the UW system. Promise made, promise kept. In his budgets, Governor Evers provided the largest increases to higher education in Wisconsin in roughly 15 years, including a record investment in technical education, $1 billion in grants for college infrastructure, and tens of millions of dollars in money for the UW system.

Increase spending on local road maintenance. Promise made, promise kept. In his budgets, Evers was able to secure a 10 percent increase in grants directed to local road maintenance while increasing the state highway budget by hundreds of millions of dollars.

Increase spending on public transit. Promise made, promise kept. In his budgets, Governor Evers secured major increases on public transit spending.

Assure high-speed broadband access to all homes and businesses. Promise made, promise kept. With more than $175 million in state funds over four years and an extra $100 million from COVID stimulus funds in addition to hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal infrastructure plan, Wisconsin is on track to achieve universal broadband access.

Create a blue ribbon panel on rural and agriculture issues. Promise made, promise kept. Throughout 2020, Governor Evers created the blue ribbon panel, filled it, and saw it generate a 50-page report with 10 major recommendations, several of which Tony has begun work on.

Create a blue ribbon panel on veterans' issues. Promise made, promise kept. Evers, after creating a similar panel that operated in 2020 and 2021, has moved next to creating a similar panel on veterans' issues.

Even with Republican control of both houses of the legislature, Governor Evers is on track to keep more promises in his first term than Governor Walker did. There's a key difference: rather than serving the corporate interests, Tony Evers is fighting for the middle class.
