Young Woman Bullied by Matt Gaetz Raises $2 Million for Abortion Rights, Says Her Next Target is Defeating Greg Abbott

Republicans have a history of helping causes they're trying to hurt with overblown, hyperbolic, theatric rhetoric. A prime example was during the confirmation hearings of Ketanji Brown Jackson, when Ted Cruz tried to paint her as racist toward white people (Rafael Cruz is not even white) by holding up children's books teaching something he apparently sees as controversial: racism is bad. When he read those books, sales exploded to the tune of millions of dollars, all of which went toward progressive authors.

The master of this craft, however, is Matt Gaetz. He made a remark on Twitter about "overeducated women" being a threat to society after the leak draft of the SCOTUS decision overturning Roe v. Wade was released in May of 2022. In response to these abhorrent remarks, activists started a website called overeducatedwomen.com that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for six different women's rights groups. That wouldn't be the last time Mr. Gaetz would inadvertently fund a cause he hated.

In July 2022, Gaetz claimed that it was "fat, unattractive women" who always spoke out the loudest in favor of abortion rights and that "nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb." This is ironic, considering Gaetz is most well known for having to pay underaged girls for sex. What makes that false remark extra despicable was that it was targeted toward a 19-year-old young woman from Houston, Texas, named Olivia Julianna. However, she was not one to let something that would destroy many people her age (and my age) take her down. Instead, she fought back, not only gaining hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, but raising more than $2 million for abortion rights in a matter of a few days via the Gen-Z for Change Abortion Fund. This money will be evenly distributed among 50 groups (one in each state) that provide funds for people to travel within the state or out of state to get abortions, and this money should help ensure thousands of people are able to access the reproductive care they need and deserve.

This is just the beginning, however. We need to keep this total going up; she's sending Matt Gaetz, who has since refused to acknowledge her existence, a bouquet of flowers for every $100,000 she raises. We need to keep the pressure on the DOJ to finally indict Matt Gaetz for what is clear evidence of child sex trafficking. We need to keep Olivia's profile rising to give her a social media presence bigger than that of Gaetz, who has 1.4 million Twitter followers, so that we can show Rapey McForehead how small of a man he really is. Finally, we need to do what Ms. Julianna has said is her next great ambition: defeat Greg Abbott handily in the 2022 election.
